SOS S5, E12: Reflecting & Growing Forward

The Trust Journey: A Year of Learning and Growing Forward After nearly a year of conversations with my 12-year-old daughter Gracie about trust, I'm reflecting on the profound wisdom she's shared. Her insights remind us that understanding trust is indeed a lifelong journey—one that requires both self-awareness and genuine commitment to growth. The Biggest Lesson: Application Over Knowledge When I asked Gracie what she'd learned most about trust through our conversations, her response cut to the heart of personal growth: "I've also learned that, you know, to learn things and take advice from people and actually put it into your life and actually, you know, use that trust and make sure that you're working it into your relationships." This insight reveals mature understanding that knowledge without application is merely intellectual exercise. Trust isn't a concept to understand—it's a practice to live. The real work happens when we take what we know and integrate it into our daily relationships. Her wisdom: understanding trust is a lifelong journey that requires active participation, not passive learning. Trust Languages: Different Ways of Showing and Receiving Trust When we explored whether people have different "trust languages" like love languages, Gracie's response was nuanced. She recognized that "trust can come in different ways"—sometimes through keeping secrets we accidentally share, other times through honoring confidences we intentionally place. However, she concluded that "trust overall is the same to make sure that if there's something that you don't want someone to do that you can trust them to not do it." While trust can be contextual—trusting someone to keep you safe versus trusting them with secrets—the core principle remains consistent. Her insight: you can trust someone in different areas while maintaining boundaries in others, but it all originates from "what is your gut saying, what's your intuition saying." Trust Resolutions: Becoming More Trustworthy Gracie's goal for becoming more trustworthy was beautifully simple: "I want people to be able to talk to me. I want to be able to comfort people. And I want people to be able to, you know, like just be able to talk to me." This focus on accessibility and emotional safety shows she understands that trustworthiness isn't just about keeping secrets—it's about creating space where people feel heard, supported, and valued. Her commitment includes "keeping confidences and like not telling other people's stories," recognizing that trust starts with our own commitments to others. Gratitude for Trust: Recognizing What Matters When asked about moments of trust she's most grateful for, Gracie highlighted her nine-year friendship with her best friend: "Every time that I have something that I want to tell someone, but I can't tell like anyone else, I can always like go to her and I think that's important to have someone who you know you can always trust." But what moved her most was when someone trusted her: "The best thing that happened with trust overall this year is when someone else trusted me with really sensitive information that they know like they felt like they couldn't tell anyone else." This reveals beautiful reciprocity—appreciating both having someone to trust and being someone others can trust. Her insight: "recognizing trust builds more trust." Advice for Trust Beginners: Don't Force It Perhaps her most practical wisdom came when asked what she'd tell someone just starting to work on trust: "Don't force it. I think that if you force it, then you know it's going to take even longer to actually build trust." She emphasized starting with self-trust: "First I think you need to build trust with yourself that you can you know trust who you trust and stuff like that." This includes deciding what trust means to you and "listening to your gut and intuition." Her fundamental insight: trust can't be rushed or manufactured—it develops naturally when we create the right conditions and give it time. The Ongoing Journey After nearly 50 conversations about trust, Gracie's wisdom centers on several key themes: *Trust is active, not passive:* It requires consistent effort to apply what we learn to our actual relationships. *Self-trust comes first:* We must learn to trust our own instincts about who and how to trust. *Trust can't be forced:* It develops naturally through consistent, safe interactions over time. *Being trustworthy matters as much as finding trustworthy people:* Creating space for others to confide in us builds reciprocal trust. *Gratitude deepens trust:* Recognizing and appreciating trust—both given and received—strengthens our capacity for authentic connection.
