Exhibition Homer Pigeon Origin: England in the early part of the 20th Century, around 1900. Osman in 1932 put the breed as a sub-variety of the Show homer, possibly before the Scandaroon was added to the Show Homer. First Breed Club formed in 1902. Overall Impression: The Exhibition Homer is fairly large in size. They are not too big or too weedy and above all they must be balanced. The first point to start at when assessing this breed is the beak and setting, as without this being reasonably good, it cannot have the desired headpiece. Characteristics of Breed: Head: The head is the most important feature, and requires each part to be separately detailed. Frontal (Front of eye) there should be no slackness either on or at the sides of the face, but should be level, described as a nicely filled face. Skull (Forehead top and back) the forehead should not be prominent, or top too high, nor too flat, otherwise the back skull will lose the accentuated curve so much desired. There is no limit to the actual length of face (Beak Point to Eye Centre),the general length in present day winner is 2" inches ( 50mm) from tip of the beak to the centre of the eye, mere length does not make a good bird, but the lack of this is somewhat of a handicap. Eyes: The eye should be fish white in all colour varieties. Eye Ceres: Generally the desired colour is black or dark, and having a hard texture. The softer colours having varying shades and a softer texture. Beak: The beak should be stout and rather blunt, mandibles of equal strength, dovetailed into the face. The beak line parallel to the bottom of the eye. Wattles: Small V-shaped, well down towards the point of the beak, and close fitting to the face, which will give an apparently short beak the length between the gape and the eye. Throat: The throat should be free from gullet. Neck: The neck should be graceful, gradually broadening onto a fairly wide, deep chest. Body: The body should be short cobby, though not small, powerful, yet balanced. Wings: The wings should be carried over the tail, flight feathers to short, strong and broad, well overlapping each other, Tail: The tail should be short and narrow, closely drawn together, straight and well carried. Legs: The legs should be short, strong and well set. The legs and toes should be quite free from feather. Plumage: The feathers should be hard and close fitting and in great condition. Stance/Carriage: Upright and bold (Guardsman on parade). Recognised Colours: In Chequers, the colours are blue, black, dun, red, yellow and silver. The chequering should be clear and distinctive throughout. Blues and Mealies should have two broad and well defined bars on the wings, there are also grizzles in various Colours. The off colours consist of Silver, Creams and Yellows, both in Bar and Chequered patterns. The colour in all should be sound throughout. Serious Faults: Thin, open or wry beak. Coarse or ill shaped wattles. Soft pale cere.Red/lemon gravel or hard eye. Thick throat or gullet. Frill or open feathered neck, long swan neck. Long shaped body, curved back. Crooked breast bone. Feathered legs or toes. Heavy or wry tail. Long legs, webbed feet, crooked claws or toes. Order of Importance: It is vital importance that the highest standard should be obtained in a typical Exhibition Homer. The first point to start with is the beak and setting, as without these being reasonably good; it cannot the desired head piece. Birds when exhibited should be in perfect natural condition.Benefical preparation of an exhibit should be encouraged. Judging: Scale of Points: Beak and setting 10 points.
