On Sunday afternoon October 15, multiple complainants called 911 from the parking lot of lilburn PD headquarters advising they were being followed by a white pickup truck. Responding officers were advised the truck had been following them for several minutes and ultimately into the WalMart parking lot at 4004 Lawrenceville Hwy. While officers were interviewing the complainants, they identified the suspect vehicle as it drove eastbound on Lawrenceville Hwy past headquarters. Two officers followed the vehicle (a white Dodge Ram 3500) and attempted to stop it using their emergency equipment at Lawrenceville Hwy. and Arcado Rd. The driver refused to stop and continued into the same Wal Mart parking lot, driving down the access road and on to Lester Rd. Here, the driver rammed the rear of one officer's car in front of him. The truck driver rammed the officers vehicle once more on Lawrenceville Hwy. At the on-ramp to Ronald Reagan Pawy, the officer attempted a precision immobilization (PIT) maneuver on the much larger vehicle which was unsuccessful. As the driver continued to flee, he struck at least three other stopped vehicles on Pleasant Hill. Lilburn officers attempted to deploy stop-sticks, which were also ineffective before calling off the pursuit. The offender was subsequently located in Norcross along with his vehicle by Gwinnett PD. The driver was identified as Mr. Salvador Tortes-Mandujano of Nicholls, GA in Coffee County. He has been charged with Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Fleeing and Attempting to Elude, Hit & Run, and numerous traffic offenses. The initial pursuing officer suffered minor abrasions from his vehicle's air bags.
