Obviously don't try this at home, but take a look at these gorgeous vipers! The cottonmouth is one of the most misunderstood animal in North America. I know people who swear up and down they've been chased for miles by, been hunted by, or infested with cottonmouths. The truth is really quite simple; people know NOTHING about snake behavior. Snakes a simple creatures who want nothing more than to stay away from people and live their lives in peace. When a cottonmouth is startled it has a variety of behaviors it may exhibit. The first, and most likely, is to flee. Often this is where the "chasing" myth comes to life. Snakes, including cottonmouths, often don't have the best eyesight or judgement in a life-threatening situation and may head to the closest shelter or cover. This is often the shadow we cast next to them. They're not chasing you they're simply looking for a dark place to hide, move out of the way and they'll keep going in the direction they were headed in. The second behavior, also misconstrued as aggression, is mouth gaping. These snakes possess a bright white mouth that they use to confuse predators. This is NOT a strike, it's the same as a rattlesnake rattling letting you know not to come any closer and to back off. This is a WARNING. These animals don't want to waste their valuable venom on some redneck that can't let them be, they need it to procure food. Most of these snakes are VERY happy to be left alone and will not go out of their way to harm people. All I'm asking is to respect these animals and give them the space necessary for them to move along. They don't deserve hate, they don't deserve death, they have a role in the ecosystem and they have a right to life same as any other. I hope you enjoyed this video!
