Let’s watch something 144-related—but not featuring the 144 itself. Today we’re talking about DW485 on route 221, a bus once allocated to the 144 from Wood Green before transferring to Go-Ahead. RIP to WN losing the 144 after 31 years of service… what more can we say? Now, about the journey. That day was our Sports Day at StoneX Stadium—my last one before moving on to sixth form. After the event, I decided to take the long way home via North Finchley and Barnet. Luckily, I managed to catch a DW on the 221—a not a very common sight! It was also my first time hearing a DW perform a kickdown, and it was pure bliss! Even my friend regretted not bringing his iPhone 4S to record it. The septic downshift was simply astonishing! These DWs are heading on their way to Edmonton, not for the 158, but for either the 217 or the rail replacements. I am very disappointed on this change, as the DWs on the 221 will never happen anymore. Except rail replacements, the closest area I can get a DW will now be the 217(from November onwards), which is miles away from home!
