Welcome to our home ❤️ We woke up to a deep freeze here in Canada this week— an unexpected early-season snow, freezing temperatures, and winds that made the morning feel like winter arrived overnight. ❄️ After feeding Jelly Bean and Mixie and doing a few simple chores, I made a warm cup of tea and opened my advent calendar, a tradition I’ve loved since childhood. When my husband arrived home from work, I made him a cozy French toast casserole topped with blueberries and strawberries, and we enjoyed breakfast together before the day got busy. With the holidays approaching, I headed out for a few errands and stopped by a local thrift store, where I was surprised by how many festive items they already had. I brought home a holiday-themed cutting board and a few damaged children’s Christmas books — and had the idea to turn the pages into handmade paper Christmas stars. They turned out beautifully, and I even made extra to attach to gifts. The next day brought even more harsh weather. At –20°F, I visited my campsite to clean up after the storm, hung a simple string of lights on a nearby tree, left peanuts for a local squirrel, and moved our chickens’ feeder indoors to keep them warm. Back at home, I ended the day by making a very simple puff pastry pizza wreath, the perfect cozy winter treat. It was lovely to spend time with you 💕 Until next week — from our home at Taigh Nadair to yours 🌍 French Toast Casserole Recipe Ingredients 1 loaf of bread, chopped into cubes 2 cups milk 6 eggs ½ cup sugar ¼ cup sweetened condensed milk 1 tablespoon cinnamon Fresh strawberries & blueberries (for topping) Powdered sugar (for dusting) Instructions Lightly oil a casserole dish and add the chopped bread. In a bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, sugar, condensed milk, and cinnamon until well combined. Pour the mixture evenly over the bread, making sure every piece is coated. Bake at 370°F (188°C) for 40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Allow the casserole to cool slightly. Top with fresh strawberries, blueberries, and a light dusting of powdered sugar. Puff Pastry Christmas Wreath Ingredients 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed Pizza sauce Pepperoni slices Shredded cheese (mozzarella works well) 1 egg (for egg wash) Parsley (fresh or dried, for topping) Instructions Preheat your oven to 370°F (188°C). Unroll the puff pastry sheet on a flat surface. Using a pizza cutter, cut vertical strips on the right side of the pastry, leaving the left side uncut. On the left side, spread a layer of pizza sauce and top with pepperoni and cheese. Roll the left side up tightly, encasing all the fillings inside. Take the strips on the right side, twist them gently, and lay them over the rolled section. Bring both ends together to form a circle and press firmly to create a wreath shape. Brush the top with an egg wash and sprinkle with parsley. Bake for 40 minutes, or until the wreath is puffed and golden brown on top. #silentvlog #christmas #thrifting #countrycooking #villagelife
