The expression “tool of art” (œuvre-outil, in french) has the appearance of simplicity : the device functions as an artwork in an artistic context, but as a tool in a professional one's. but what are the features of such a device? and what are its felicity conditions to function? we'll describe these "tools of art" through the lens of (co)production, of the involved collectives, their temporalities, the required maintenance, their economics, and we'll see how this conception of artwork reconnects art and action through ordinary practices, rather than through statements, that change neither the way art is made, nor practices in other disciplines. Franck Leibovici is an artist and poet. though the 7 years he spent with julien seroussi working with and at the international criminal court (icc), he developed what he called "tools of art", which are artworks, when exhibited in museums or art centers, but tools when used in professional contexts. in that regard, his "tools of art" have been exhibited in museums and biennials (bunkier sztuki (poland) 2016, taipei biennale (taiwan) 2020, pompidou-metz (france) 2021) as well as activated in legal contexts (international criminal court, the hagues, 2019, 2022, kinshasa (democratic republic of congo), 2023). two books give an account of those devices : bogoro (2016) and muzungu à la cpi (2023 ; forthcoming english translation).
