The original (some would say best!) version of a song that has become something of a folk club standard since introduced to the scene by Roaring Jelly in the late '70s. It's also popular abroad and in 2006 was included on the soundtrack of an American DVD about potty training (yes, honestly!). It was one of the most requested tracks on Mike Harding's long-running BBC Radio 2 folk and acoustic music show, it's most requested comedy track, and one of Mike's personal favourites. The song was written by Clive Harvey around 1976 or '77 (he can't remember exactly!) as a lead vocal feature for bass player Mick Hennessy, who handed his double bass to Derek Pearce for this number while Clive played ukulele-banjo. It soon became a crowd favourite. This version is the original studio recording as included on the Topic LP "In The Roar" in 1981. It is currently one of 16 tracks on the CD compilation "Here's Some We Made Earlier... The many flavours of Roaring Jelly" (see www.cliveharvey.net). It's also available on the CD "Nowt So Funny As Folk" on the ADA label (ADA105CD). LVT
