West Point Organist Craig Williams plays the third organ sonata, in A Major, from Felix Mendelssohn's Opus 65 collection on the grand Tamburini organ at the church of San Giovanni Bosco in Bologna, Italy. The sonata has two movements, the first "Con moto maestoso," beginning and ending with a grand march bookending a complex double fugue built over the chorale "Aus tiefer Not." The second movement is marked "Andante tranquillo," slow but flowing and much quieter than the first movement. The church is a modern basilica, built in the 1980's. The organ, designed by the famous Italian organ virtuoso Fernando Germani, was originally installed at the Vatican, in the Auditorium of Palazzo Pio XII but then gifted to the church by St. John Paul II in 1990. With almost 13,000 pipes (193 ranks) playing over five manuals and pedal, it stands as the third largest pipe organ in Italy. #pipeorgan #italy #basilica #mendelssohn
