What does planting a tree have to do with peace? In this Tu BiShvat talk, educator and environmental activist Jared Goldfarb weaves together Jewish text, his experience living in Jerusalem, and real-world initiatives that bring Israelis and Palestinians together through environmental action. Drawing on Torah, Midrash, and Talmud, including the powerful commandment lo tashchit (“you shall not destroy”), Jared explores how care for the land, especially in times of war, can become a pathway toward dignity, partnership, and hope. From protecting olive harvests in the West Bank with Rabbis for Human Rights, to shared environmental problem-solving at the Arava Institute, this talk invites us to look at the “tree in the battlefield” and ask how sustainability, education, and human encounter can help break cycles of fear and othering. Recorded at Central Reform Congregation during the Tu BiShvat service on January 30, 2026, this reflection challenges us to live our values visibly: to plant, to protect, and to remember that even small acts can help repair the world.
