What else are you absorbing with your food? 🤯 💻 I’m not talking food, nutrients or even chemicals, I’m talking about what you’re taking in around you whilst you eat. Have you heard of mindful eating? One aspect of mindful eating is to focus on enjoying your food rather than watching tv or scrolling through Instagram. I get it, our lunch break might be a good time to catch up on the latest news or even catch up on emails. But does it help your digestion? No. Good digestion relies on the body producing digestive enzymes to help break down and absorb our food. Two things that help with this are the cephalic phase of digestion and being in a relaxed state. The cephalic stage of digestion is before you start eating. This is the phase where we anticipate and smell our food before we begin eating. This phase is often missing in modern times thanks to convenience foods and busy lives. When we think about food and or start preparing it, our brains start sending messages to the various parts of the digestive system to get ready to receive the food. For example, our mouths might water -producing salivary enzymes. This is an important first stage of digestion. Being in a relaxed state (sometimes called rest and digest by us in the nutrition world) means that our bodies are open to receiving and digesting food. When feeling tense, the body shuts off digestion and goes into flight, flight or freeze mode. This survival mode isn’t optimal for digesting food. Be mindful to approach meals in a relaxed way, avoiding watching the news, catching up on work and scrolling through social media (which often leaves us triggered rather than calm). The vibrations of music can influence our mental and physical health (more on that another time). Instead, if possible, eat outside listening to the birds, or listen to some relaxing music to keep the body in a calm state that supports digestion.
