In this video, we explain how a land that was once covered with wild bushes and unused plants was slowly converted into a productive fruit garden. Many people think difficult soil types cannot support fruit trees. But with proper planning and soil preparation, even challenging land can become suitable for cultivation. In this location, the subsoil is heavy clay soil (களிப்பு மண்). During summer it becomes extremely hard like stone, and during rain it turns very sticky. This type of soil often restricts root development if trees are planted directly without preparation. To improve the soil condition, the pits are prepared by mixing: • Local topsoil • Red soil • Organic manure • Biofertilizers • Vermicompost Each tree is planted in 3 feet depth × 3 feet width pits (3x3 method) so the roots get loose and fertile soil to establish properly. Spacing is also planned carefully. Large trees such as mango, jackfruit, and sapota are planted at 20 feet spacing. Between these larger trees, smaller fruit plants like: • Sweet lime • Guava • Lemon are planted so the land remains productive and well utilized. Overall, this creates a planned orchard system where a tree exists roughly every 10 feet within the layout. Based on our nursery experience, soil preparation and spacing planning are the two most important steps when developing a fruit garden. This method is suitable for farm lands and can also inspire home gardeners planning larger backyard orchards.
