This is a story about the residents of Ust-Kamenogorsk and Ridder, who are suffering from Kazakhstan's transition to a unified time zone introduced in March of this year. Now, in these cities, evening twilight begins as early as 3 p.m., and by 4 p.m., the streets are dark. In Ridder, darkness falls even earlier. To say that local residents are unhappy would be an understatement. In summer, they endured sunrises at 2–3 a.m., and now they are troubled by the short daylight hours. According to the townspeople, early darkness is just one issue. Another problem is that they feel tired and drowsy as early as the evening since, under the previous time zone used in eastern Kazakhstan, it would already be 10–11 p.m.
