Genoa is a city with an overwhelming charm, squeezed between the mountains and the sea and with a past as a crossroads of different peoples and cultures that several poets, writers and singer-songwriters have recounted. Overlooking the Ligurian Sea, it was the capital of one of the maritime republics from 1099 to 1797, becoming one of the largest naval powers on the continent. Still today a major economic center, a university, scientific, cultural, musical and artistic hub of great importance, it boasts a historic center that unfolds among the enchanting caruggi, the narrow alleys flanked by the high external walls of the houses. Capital of delicious pesto and good food, it is home to numerous industrial activities, but also to some of the most important tourist and trade fair events in the country. The port is among the main Mediterranean and European ports. In this video we will start the walk from the Genova Principe station passing through Via Balbi in front of the Royal Palace and we will dive into the maze of alleys of the historic center of Genoa. The Principe station was built in 1860 and is the nerve center of the city's transport system. Around 1602, construction of the so-called "Strada delli Signori Balbi"began, today's Via Balbi in Genoa on the initiative of Stefano Balbi, a member of the aristocratic Genoese Balbi family.Via Balbi is one of the main streets in the center of Genoa, and since 2006 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site. We will pass under one of the old gates of the walls of ancient Genoa, Porta dei Vacca, to then enter Via del Campo. The alleys are the heart of its centuries-old history: it is a maze of narrow streets dating back to the Middle Ages, of which they retain the arcane charm. The carruggi - made famous by some songs by Fabrizio De Andrè - are a large open-air museum, made of stone, marble and slate. Every corner is characterized by monuments, churches, small squares, palaces, which tell the story of the glories of a city that was master of the seas for a long time. Walking through this sort of labyrinth you come across wonderful and unexpected treasures, such as an old votive shrine or a slate bas-relief. Since the Middle Ages, the Genoese have protected their homes with sacred images painted or sculpted and then placed in niches or tabernacles. The walk continues along Via Cairoli and continues along Via Garibaldi with its architectural richness and imposing impact, it is one of the main streets of Genoa and one of the largest in the historic center. Originally Strada Maggiore, then Strada Nuova, until the nineteenth century it was known by the name of Via Aurea. In 1882 it was finally dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi. Walking along Via Garibaldi you can savor the ancient beauty of this wonderful city through the elegant and stately buildings of the rich Genoese aristocrats.Starting from the mid-16th century Genoa was enriched with magnificent facades with stucco, marble or painted decorations, grandiose atriums, splendid gardens with fountains and nymphaeums. In 2006, “Le Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi del Rolli” were included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. From via Garibaldi passing through via XXV Aprile we will arrive in Piazza de Ferrari. It is the main square of Genoa and the commercial, financial and economic hub of the city. The square is dedicated to Raffaele De Ferrari, Duke of Galliera, politician and banker. After that we will return to the oldest historical center passing through piazza di San Matteo, via Macelli di Soziglia and Piazza Campetto passing through via di Sottoripa. This street is a large area of the medieval historical center of Genoa, which extends along piazza Caricamento and the area of the ancient port from piazza Cavour, home of the fish market, to via al Ponte Calvi. It includes the oldest public porticoes known to exist in Italy: in fact, they were started between 1125 and 1133 starting from the current via San Lorenzo, the artery that leads to the cathedral of the same name. There are some of the buildings included in the Rolli and, as part of the historical center to which it belongs, it has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site. To finish the tour we arrive in Piazza Banchi. Located close to the most important port of the city, it was the ancient site of the grain market. It was later renamed piazza “dei banchi” (12th century), due to the presence of the money changers' stalls positioned under the porticoes of the various buildings. In the sixteenth century, following a fire, the Loggia dei mercanti was built based on a design by Andrea Ceresola, known as Vannone, intended to provide a covered office for the bankers and money changers operating in the area. From 1855 it became the seat of the first Stock and Commodity Exchange in Italy. To the right of the Loggia, the Church of San Pietro in Banchi.
