Genoa is a city with an overwhelming charm, squeezed between the mountains and the sea and with a past as a crossroads of different peoples and cultures that several poets, writers and singer-songwriters have recounted. Overlooking the Ligurian Sea, it was the capital of one of the maritime republics from 1099 to 1797, becoming one of the largest naval powers on the continent. Still today a major economic center, a university, scientific, cultural, musical and artistic hub of great importance, it boasts a historic center that unfolds among the enchanting caruggi, the narrow alleys flanked by the high external walls of the houses. Capital of delicious pesto and good food, it is home to numerous industrial activities, but also to some of the most important tourist and trade fair events in the country. The port is among the main Mediterranean and European ports. We resume our tour from the Maritime Station to follow via Gramsci. The Genoa Maritime Station is the main embarcation point for cruise traffic of the port of Genoa. Its embarkation bridge, called Ponte dei Mille and the rear area of Santa Limbania, were used by pilgrims heading to the Holy Land, who found shelter in the nearby Commenda of the Order of the Knights of Malta, a structure still well preserved at the beginning of the current Via Pre'. In the last twenty years of the nineteenth century, Genoa became the most equipped port of departure for flows from all over northern Italy, as well as overseas cruise trips, and the entire complex was renovated to adapt it to new needs. The Commenda complex served the dual function of a maritime station on the Holy Land routes and hospital, initially for pilgrims and later for the sick and indigent of the city. It was manufactured starting from 1180. To continue we will pass in front of the Museum of the Sea, the submarine Nazario Sauro and the Marina of Genoa to get to the expo in front of the Galleon of Pirates and Aquarium and City of Children. The Galata Museum of the Sea is the largest and most innovative maritime museum in the Mediterranean. Four exhibition plans follow the marinery and the relationship between Genoa and the sea, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age. Outside an open air where there is the archeological-port park that constitutes the waterfront of the museum and where the submarine Nazario Sauro is moored, unique in Italy that can be visited at sea. La Citta dei Bambini is the first experience museum dedicated to the "FIVE SENSES" in Italy, where children and teenagers from 2 to 12 years old, together with parents or other accompanying adults, can take a real journey to discover themselves and the world through direct experience. We will follow the walk through the Bigo of Genoa and return in front of Palazzo San Giorgio, Piazza della Raibetta and we will go up via San Lorenzo passing in front of the cathedral of Genoa and Piazza Matteotti and from here we will return to Porta Soprana. The Bigo is the panoramic elevator located in the area of the ancient port near the Aquarium of Genoa. Designed by architect Renzo Piano, it offers an extraordinary aerial perspective of one of the most extensive and art-rich historic centres in Europe. Palazzo San Giorgio was built to the design of Friar Oliverio, architect and Cistercian monk, around the middle of the thirteenth century as the seat of the Municipality; it then became the seat of customs and in the fifteenth century it passed to Banco di San Giorgio, from which it took its name. From 1903 it houses the offices of the Genoese port authority. In 1835 the project for the construction of Via San Lorenzo was approved, which would be completed in the middle of the nineteenth century. Along its route opens the homonymous square, in front of the city's Cathedral. It is the street, thanks to the numerous clubs that crowd the area, of the walk of Genoese and tourists. Erected around the year 1098 on a previous basilica of the fifth - 6th century and expanded over the centuries in solemn and precious forms, the cathedral named after San Lorenzo Martire houses the ashes of the patron saint of the city San Giovanni Battista, who arrived in Genoa at the end of the First Crusade. The Basilica of San Lorenzo became a cathedral starting from the ninth century. If you enjoyed this video, please like this video and subscribe to my channel for more content. Thanks a lot.
