*RARE* Montana Rail Link SD45 in the wild! 10/7/2018 // Trinity Rail Productions

On a quick trip through MRL land in October 2018, I came across a westbound ballast train on Winston Hill east of Helena with MRL 355, one of Montana Rail Link's two remaining operational SD45s, trailing behind SD40-2XR 265. I first caught the train several miles out of Helena and then again arriving at the Helena yard. The ballast train just happened to pull in next to another train that was sitting in the yard with MRL 346, MRL's other SD45, on the point. This pair of SD45s are all that remain of MRL's long time collection of classic 45 series locomotives, with SD70ACes taking over almost all of the heavy work in general road and helper service. 346 and 355 have been in and out of service over recent years, but were alive and well on this day in 2018 and as far as I know are still in operation as of February 2021. However, as they age and as MRL has continued to acquire more ACes, their days are still most certainly numbered. Catch them while you can! Thanks for watching!
