On May 29, 1453, the Ottoman Empire captured Constantinople after a 53-day siege, ending nearly two millennia of Roman and Byzantine rule. The 21-year-old Sultan Mehmed II commanded 50,000 to 80,000 troops against approximately 8,000 defenders led by Emperor Constantine XI. Ottoman artillery, including massive cannons firing 600-pound cannonballs, breached the legendary Theodosian walls that had protected the city for 800 years. Despite heroic resistance, the defenders were overwhelmed when elite Janissaries broke through on the final assault. Constantine XI died fighting in the streets. The conquest marked the end of the medieval period, sparked the Renaissance through Greek scholarly migration to Italy, and established Ottoman dominance in southeastern Europe.
