The Newton-Pepys problem is another famous named problem in probability. It is an example of a problem that uses the same thinking that underpins the binomial distribution. However as we haven’t covered the binomial distribution yet in this playlist, we will work it out without assuming you know anything about the binomial distribution. The problem is as follows: Which is more likely? 1: Getting at least 1 six when you throw 6 dice. 2. Getting at least 2 sixes when you throw 12 dice. 3. Getting at least 3 sixes when you throw 18 dice.
