Macedonian residents applauding as tanks go by 4. Various more of shelling STORYLINE: In the Balkans, Macedonia's military has begun an operation aimed at flushing out ethnic Albanian rebels. Heavy mortar barrages echoed through the hills surrounding Tetovo early on Sunday as fighting escalated. The sustained attacks came as both sides were warning of major actions. The early morning explosions were the heaviest in days. A convoy of armoured vehicles rumbled down the center of downtown Tetovo just before at dawn. They turned toward the ethnic Albanian village of Gajre, four kilometers (two and-a-half miles) outside the centre of Tetovo. Two Soviet-made T-55 tanks also later moved through the downtown area, heading for the hills.
