Rules of origin | Episode 8 | A survey on the utilisation of EU FTAs by Belgian exporters

Participants: Guest: Wouter Decoster, Belgian Foreign trade agency Interviewer: Arianna Bondi, EUI Belgium, a small nation oriented towards international trade with many SMEs looking to internationalize, has been supporting many EU FTAs without necessarily knowing whether exporters are using them. Based on a survey, Belgian exporters are making good use of FTAs as their utilization rate is at an average of 74% but there is still a considerable margin for improvements. Finding where the competitiveness is left untapped looking per TFA and per sector has been a very useful exercise to unveil some key findings. Through this survey, the Belgian Foreign Trade Agency found that Belgian exporters who were not using FTAs lacked awareness of their existence despite exporting to those countries. Also, the study unveiled that several intermediaries also had limited knowledge and did not make good use FTAs.
