However, I didn't manage to ride the northern section of the line to Messina. However, in November 2022, I rode on one of the awesome Treno Notte services that Trenitalia runs down to Sicily. ICN1963 runs all the way from from Milano Centrale to Siracuse via the Messina Strait Train ferry (videos already uploaded!). I made sure I completed videoing the section from Messina as my train ran along it non-stop. This line is really scenic, with views of mainland Italy across the Strait, and increasingly dramatic beaches and cliffs. At the end of the video Mt Etna looms from the haze over Taormina. The line is double track to Giampilieri (with many stations, some only built in the last 14yrs) and single track from there onwards. One day, the single track section through Taormina will be bypassed, linking into the other section of modernised line just south of Fiumefreddo. Until then, we get to enjoy the classic single track coastal line through to the georgeous station at Taormina. I was filming from the big panoramic windows of my MU sleeper coach. Not sure yet what the locos were, but it was of course top'n tailed (doppia semetrica) E464s in InterCity livery. Highlight of the trip was finding that two ex-NSB (Norway) Di3 Nohab locos (still in NSB colours) were being used on infrastructure trains. They were both basking in the yard at Messina!
