One of the rescuers brought me an adult female who had been on the ground in the north of Sydney; she doesn't have any bat friendly vets so she drove 45 kms to me for assessment, and access to my vet facilities. I have great vets who are at the end of a phonecall for me and who will fit me in for euthanasia of animals as an emergency. Jordi, had a baby on her, and it was at the beginning of season so baby Taffeteffie was really small. Though her forearm measurement suggested she was 10 days old, her slightly scabby umbilicus area suggested she was 4 days old; umbilical cords fall off on day 3 after birth. I'm not sure if it was just that she was well nourished in utero so when she was born early she was of a fairly good size for a premmie, or if I was totally wrong in my ageing assessment. All I know is that she appeared a lot younger than her measurements suggested. Jordi from Gordon was euthanased because she had a spinal fracture; there were vaccinated nurses on so I left them with her; they had to fit her in and could have taken hours, so I couldn't wait. Jordi had analgesia and a quiet nook before she was anaesthetised and xrayed. She had a spinal fracture at the base of her ribs, and another one slightly higher which affected her breathing; she also appeared to have a fairly significant head injury with a head tilt. Euthanasia was the very best of her options. More about Taffeteffie when her footage surfaces. She went on to go to Auntie Jack and has recently come back to us for release. Of the entire tragedy, at least we have Taffeteffie as a survivor against the odds. Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult). https://tolgabathospital.org/donate/ Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me. If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me. IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt. The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie. Here’s Jenny’s email. jenny@tolgabathospital.org
