A reflection of her deep appreciation for jazz driven by its ability to unify people and the universal experiences of joy, sorrow, love, and prayer, recent college program graduate Emma Dayhuff’s original composition, “Vibrations a Mile Across,” a mixture of music and prose, was presented at this year’s masters recital for the class of 2020. Dayhuff said, "The music itself is about believing in one's self and those moments when you allow yourself to dream a little bit bigger. I've played a lot of different genres of music and jazz has always felt like home, and not only musically, but also because of the community that surrounds it." This poem expresses a debt in particular to the Black American philosophers, mentors, musicians and friends who have taught me how to be more deeply curious and brave and spiritual and generous with my life and my music." Adapted from an arrangement originally written for septet to one for solo bass, Dayhuff is featured on upright and electric bass. This spring saw the first-ever virtual masters recitals in our college program's 25-year history. Each student in the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA's Class of 2020 presented original compositions performed with their classmates while observing social distancing. The recitals were conducted via Zoom for UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music faculty including Institute Chairman and distinguished professor Herbie Hancock, music department chair Travis J. Cross, Global Jazz Studies chair Steven Loza and professor Eddie S. Meadows, among others. #UCLA2020 #ThisisUCLAMusic
