Vanessa's research explores how artificial intelligence is being developed for sickle cell disease and how these technologies interact with racial inequities, patient mistrust, and gaps in care. By combining policy analysis, patient surveys, and autoethnography, they examine how AI tools often reproduce forms of bias, risk thinking, and biomedical reductionism that already shape SCD health experiences. Vanessa uses justice-centred frameworks to highlight what AI misses when lived experience is excluded, and to propose approaches for designing more equitable, patient-informed AI for SCD. Their work ultimately aims to ensure that AI supports the needs, dignity, and realities of people with sickle cell disease.
