Is AI eroding public confidence in technology? Can AI be trustworthy? In the second Turing Lecture, Abeba Birhane will unpack the biases in data and its downstream impact on AI systems and shows how it can lead to unfair outcomes in our daily lives. She'll look at why this happens, why it’s such a big issue and how researchers, activists and policy makers are tackling the problem. By the end of this talk, you'll have an improved understanding of the AI systems that increasingly shape our world. You'll be better equipped to ask critical questions about AI technologies and understand why rigorous testing of AI systems and accountability of tech corporations is so crucial - no matter your background, you'll learn something valuable. This series of Turing Lectures is presented by The Alan Turing Institute, in partnership with Knowledge Quarter. 00:00 Welcome and Introduction 00:34 The Alan Turing Institute and Lecture Series 01:38 Exploring AI and Society 02:59 Introducing Dr. Abeba Berhane 05:30 Understanding AI: Definitions and Misconceptions 12:57 AI's Impact on Society and Concerns 29:57 Empirical Evidence and AI Audits 39:36 Data Practices and Ethical Concerns 46:39 AI's Societal and Environmental Impact 52:21 Big Tech's Influence on AI 56:11 The Impact of Influential Papers on Deepfake Technology 57:10 The Rise and Consequences of Deepfake Pornography 59:36 Deepfake's Influence on Politics and Society 01:00:47 Challenges in Maintaining Knowledge Repositories 01:10:56 The Environmental Cost of AI 01:16:15 Ethical and Regulatory Issues in AI 01:22:53 Concluding Thoughts and Q&A #artificialintelligence #aidevelopment
