Farne Islands by Sea Kayak our January jaunt 2022

The Farne Islands By Sea Kayak 2022 With a break in the weather and a group of good friends we took advantage of some excellent sea kayaking conditions around the iconic Farne Islands off the beautiful Northumberland coast. The rocky island group stretch out some six miles miles from the coastline. The islands create a restriction in tidal flow along the coast, and as the tide forces its way through the narrow gaps between the islands it produces fast tidal races and great disturbance at the surface known as overfalls. When forces of wind and swell interact with these tidal races, huge breaking waves and violent overfalls are produced creating a great risk to any sea going vessel or watercraft. Our trip produced some excellent sea kayaking conditions, allowing us to play in the confused water, getting as close as we dare to the large breaking waves. It was great to be out there with the seals interacting with us, showing us all how things should be done, as they poked their heads out of the face of the waves and effortlessly surfed along.
