Side Quest 34 – Rob Roy Glacier, New Zealand

Today we took ourselfs and our car on a little adventure. We had planned to hike the Rob Roy Glacier track, what we didn't know tho, was, that the road to get there included 9 fords we had to cross with the car. Luckily we succsseded. Then it was time for hiking. The path followed a river before crossing it and then it ascended up a side valley until we reached the first lookout. From there you couldn't see that much and we decided to go up to the upper lookout in hope of some better views. And boy did it deliver. It was one of the most stunning views we ever had on the south island. From the glacier there were about 20 waterfalls coming out and down the mountain side and it was just spectacular. After a long break, admiring the views, we made our way back to the car and back (through 9 fords) to the road and further to Makarora where we had our accomodation for the next 2 nights. We are Marcus and Sabrina, a couple from Switzerland and this year we hiked 614 km from Cape Reinga to Auckland on Te Araroa (the long pathway) in New Zealand.
