The deaths of seven men in 2016 enjoying the beach on a sunny day culminated in an inquest and verdict by Alan Craze the Hastings coroner on 30th June 2017 as 'Death by Misadventure'. With evidence that has come to light AFTER the inquest, it's seems highly likely the coroner's verdict was flawed! Rother Council failed to provide lifeguards or proper safety measures on the beach at Camber. Despite calls and pleas over the past 20 years from risk assessment reports, the RNLI and a former senior Coastal Control officer (who was a qualified lifeguard) who resigned in disgust from Rother Council in 2007 because the Council refused to employ lifeguards, the Coroner should have taken these grave concerns into consideration and should have held Rother District Council culpable for the deaths of the seven men by failing to provide proper measures to protect the safety of the general public. With an income of up to £50,000 a DAY from parking revenues during the summer from charging £12 a day for parking and up to 20,000+ people a day that can visit the beach, the Council had MORE than enough money to pay for lifeguards, boats and other safety equipment to patrol. Camber Sands is one of the most dangerous stretches of beach on the south coast of the UK and was a tragedy waiting to happen that could have been prevented.
