Asalam O alikum viewers welcome to my you tube channel my name is Ihtisham Ak nazar and you are watching Dr chemist you tube channel.... In this video lecture you can learn about electronegativity.. Electronegativity is the tendency of an atom to attract shared electrons (or electron density) towards itself when it forms a chemical bond with another atom. It reflects how strongly an atom pulls bonding electrons in a molecule. Discovered by: Linus Pauling (he also introduced the first electronegativity scale). Symbol: Usually denoted by the Greek letter χ (chi). Trend in the Periodic Table: Across a period (→): Electronegativity increases because atomic size decreases and nuclear charge increases. Down a group (↓): Electronegativity decreases because atomic size increases and the attraction between the nucleus and bonding electrons weakens. Most and Least Electronegative Elements: Most electronegative element: Fluorine (χ = 3.98) Least electronegative elements: Cesium (Cs) and Francium (Fr) Importance: Determines bond type: Large difference → Ionic bond Small difference → Covalent bond Moderate difference → Polar covalent bond Helps predict polarity and reactivity of molecules. Example: In H–F, fluorine is more electronegative than hydrogen, so the shared electrons are pulled closer to fluorine, making the bond polar.
