A new initiative is underway that could shave valuable time off commuters’ trips. But these changes aren’t just a technical upgrade; they represent a shift in how the entire Bay Area moves. So, what exactly is happening? Let’s find out, right here on this episode of Great Train Speed. Caltrain on the Move Caltrain’s Board of Directors recently approved the FY2026 budget. The $260 million operating budget, backed by fares, Measure RR, state SB 125 funds, and STA carryforward dollars, comes with $10.9 million in cost savings from reduced labor and non-labor expenses. These savings were achieved without cutting service, showing Caltrain’s dedication to financial discipline. Riders can still expect electrified trains every 15 minutes during peak periods and every 30 minutes at other times, weekends included. Ridership, too, is climbing. April numbers were 60% higher than the year before, and weekend travel demand has now surpassed any point in the 161-year history of the corridor. On the capital side, the $34.8 million FY2026 budget, funded through a mix of federal, state, regional, and local sources, focuses on safety and repairs, including grade crossing upgrades. Still, Caltrain anticipates an average annual shortfall of about $75 million between FY2027 and FY2035. Caltrain is coming to your station faster, here's how Performance is improving as well. On-time performance hit 95.3% in July 2025, a sharp rise from 87.3% a year earlier, although delays were caused by vehicle intrusions and two tragic trespasser strikes. June 2025 saw similar progress at 92.7% OTP, despite another fatal incident in Palo Alto. Altogether, Caltrain is streamlining expenses, finding new revenue sources, and building partnerships to cover future funding gaps while attracting riders with events, a redesigned Go Pass, and city-level initiatives that support transit-oriented development. Caltrain is coming to your station faster, here's how And they’re not stopping there; more improvements are already in motion, all designed to make your Caltrain trips smoother, faster, and more enjoyable. Imagine shorter waiting times, easier transfers, and a travel experience that feels less stressful and more reliable. As a traveler, does that make you excited about what’s coming next?
