David Peyton, PhD, has dedicated his life's work to eradicating malaria from the face of the earth. He shares his research and breakthrough with his lead compound - DM1157 and prepares us that this is marathon, not a sprint. We can solve this problem together with resources, compassion and global execution. Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite. In 2018 an estimated 219 million cases of malaria occurred worldwide and 435,000 people died, mostly children in the African Region. About 1,700 cases of malaria are diagnosed in the United States each year. The vast majority of cases in the United States are in travelers and immigrants returning from countries where malaria transmission occurs, many from sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. With special thanks to core the TEDxPortland organizing team, 70+ volunteers and cherished partners - without you this experience would not be possible. Our event history can be found TEDxPortland.com In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
