Under WorkChoices, I was working behind a bar for less than $10 an hour. I was classified as a subcontractor — which meant no automatic super contributions. If I didn't pay it myself out of that already meagre wage, nothing went in. And when you're earning less than $10 an hour, rent comes first. That's why I take superannuation seriously. It's not a theoretical policy debate — it's deferred wages, and it should be universal and enforceable for every working Australian. This week I spoke in support of legislation that does two things: it modestly recalibrates super tax concessions for balances above $3 million, and it extends the Low Income Superannuation Tax Offset to around 1.3 million more Australians — 60% of them women. The numbers that matter: 99.5% of Australians see no change to their super tax treatment LISTO threshold rises from $37,000 to $45,000 from 1 July 2027 Around 770,000 additional Australians become eligible for LISTO Eligible workers could gain around $15,000 more in retirement savings over a working life 14 times as many Australians benefit from the LISTO boost as are affected by the change at the top. Super should work for working people. This legislation makes it fairer.
