I spoke in the Federation Chamber on the ASIO Amendment Bill, which updates our security laws for 2026. Security isn’t just borders and bases anymore — it’s networks, data and trust. This bill modernises laws from 2003 to address today’s threats: digital espionage, covert foreign interference, sabotage of critical infrastructure, and radicalisation in private chat channels. The bill makes ASIO’s questioning powers permanent while strengthening safeguards. Attorney-General approval for every warrant. Independent oversight at every stage. If someone’s charged, questioning only before a retired judge. Parliament reviews it again in three years. I connect this to Moore through ECU’s world-class cyber capability in Joondalup. When hostile actors target our research partners or Defence suppliers, we need legal tools that work in real time with proper accountability. The answer to overreach concerns? The checks are built in: ministerial approval, independent oversight, IGIS review, parliamentary review. Capability and transparency together. This is how mature democracies protect themselves — updating laws to match reality while keeping rights and accountability front and centre.
