He shows how Jesus quietly shifts the axis of spirituality from mere performance and obedience to something deeper: forgiven people love much. To unpack the story, he draws a simple “map” of two ways people miss grace: Unrighteousness: “I’ve blown it too badly. I don’t belong. I’m out of second chances.” Self-righteousness: “I’ve earned this. I’m keeping the rules. It should be fair.” Using the idea of a bounded community vs. a centered community, DeNeff explains how Jesus overturns the old “purity rules” (contact, transmission, permanence) and creates a new kind of community, one held together not by sameness, but by proximity and loyalty to Christ.
