Rockhounding for Petrified Wood, also known as Agatized Wood, takes on new meaning when we visit and Rockhound the surrounding areas nearby The Petrified Forest in Arizona. Here we find Agate, Jasper, Petrified Wood, and learn more about how wood is petrified. The Petrified Forest and surrounding areas were once a lush, tropical forest full of enormous Conifer trees. Running through the heavily forested area was a very large river that brought with it silt, clay and sand. As the river flooded or changed course, the Conifer trees collapsed and sank to the bottom where they were covered and buried in silt, clay and sand. As time passed, the silica and mineral rich water leached into and replaced those parts of the trees that were decomposing. The silica, mixed with other minerals that provide color, displaced and perfectly replicated the decomposing trees, leaving enormous petrified trunks, limbs and even roots.
