*Just gonna put this at the top: there is one mandatory death – a deathwarp for the Ultra Sandwich berry – that we overlook for the purposes of this challenge. So don’t be alarmed if you see that death happen or see 1 death in the journal. I’m writing this description a bit after getting the run and I think I have so much adrenaline in me that my hands are vibrating at like 20 Hz. Idk if that’s healthy, whatever. Would gladly die of a heart attack irl to get this run. Holy shit it’s actually over. I was just feeling down a few days ago, thinking it might take me another eternity and a half to get this. I have genuinely no idea how my consistency did the thing it just did. All of a sudden the majority of my runs were making it really far, and then I just pulled this one out. It feels almost surreal for the grind to be done now. So this is very possibly the coolest thing I will do in Celeste ever for the rest of my life. Perhaps I’ll do more difficult runs in the future, but I don’t think any of them could feel as special as this one does to me. Honestly I was never expecting things to end up like this, because I never had any special connection with SC prior to doing deathless lobby attempts. It wasn’t even originally on my radar; I only did Beginner Lobby Deathless as a warmup for SJ's Beginner Lobby, and then Intermediate as a warmup for SJ again. But something just clicked with me during my Intermediate grind. I think it was in large part due to the fact that SC Lobbies Deathless wasn’t really a thing that anyone seemed to be talking about beyond Beginner. Even then, those runs were a couple years old by the time I did it. It felt like I was exploring truly uncharted territory, not only something that nobody had attempted but something that nobody even had their eyes on. Well, I’m sure there must have been some people with some interest, but as far as I’m aware I was the first to commit to it. So in a way, SC Lobbies Deathless became “my thing”. I also found during Intermediate Lobby that SC lobbies deathless appealed to me more than SJ. SC sometimes has these funny inconsistent bits, like the seeker nonsense at the end of Claustrophobia and Madelina Jones and the Temple of Zoom, or the strange movement required to clear Ligament. The gameplay is great, don’t get me wrong, it just isn’t always as clean-cut and perfectly setup as in Strawberry Jam. It’s a stylistic difference. But those inconsistent bits have a charm to me, and they make the run, both in performance and in labbing, much more interesting. This is primarily why I decided to diverge from my plan of doing SJ Intermediate, and went right to SC Advanced instead. After SC Advanced my plan was to then actually do SJ Intermediate, which I did very nearly do, but… Spring Collab was still calling to me. I wasn’t sure at the time if I was up for doing Expert Lobby, but I at least took a stab at labbing it to see how it would feel. And next thing I knew, I had swiftly abandoned SJ once again and was in for it with SC Expert Lobby. Now that I’ve spent a combined ~400 hours on Spring Collab lobbies, it would be surprising if I didn’t feel some emotional attachment to it. These have been great. Okay so the difficulty, holy shit the difficulty. This grind was the first time in Celeste that I have straight up considered giving up, multiple times. Not due to a lack of interest or commitment, but because the challenge would seem so big at times that I would literally be unsure if I had the mental capacity to finish it. And that’s saying something, because I don’t believe in hard skill caps in Celeste, but oh man it would really feel like that sometimes. There were so many runs where I died early and/or in stupid ways to the point where I’d feel like a fraud for even attempting this. There were other runs where I would make it 25 minutes in and feel like I’d overcome something huge, and then realize that there’s still over half the run left and wonder how I could ever hold on for that much longer. This is the first grind I’ve done in Celeste that I would describe as truly overwhelming. I'm glad I managed to pull through, somehow. …alright, I think I’m out of yapping juice. That’s probably a good thing, I’m almost out of description lol. If anyone’s wondering about Grandmaster Lobby: I have no plans for it. As much as I would like to do it, this run already pushed the limits of what I’m willing to do, and I can’t guarantee that I’ll ever feel ready to take on GM. Hopefully, someday, someone can pick up the torch for me. So for the foreseeable future, this will mark the end of my SC lobbies deathless journey. Thanks to everyone who supported me at any point throughout my lobby runs. Especially while grinding this lobby, all of you who popped into the comments on my occasional update posts helped me stay motivated. Now that I’m free, it’s time to find some other cool Celeste stuff to do.
