The Origin of the Afghan Hound. It is a very old breed that descends from Middle Eastern hunting dogs. We would have found it on drawings dating from 2,000 years before Jesus-Christ! Afghan nomads crossed this hound with the Kyrgyz and with the Bakhmull, another hound from the mountainous regions of Afghanistan. At the time, it was used to hunt gazelles and hares, and even to challenge leopards! It took a very long time for this dog to find its way to Europe: it reached England towards the end of the 19th century with soldiers returning from the Anglo-Afghan war. Its importation became more sustained around 1920. Then, towards the end of the 1970s, its popularity exploded when Mattel used an Afghan hound as a pet for its famous Barbie. The character of the Afghan Hound. This dog is very independent and proud. He is calm, rather playful and sensitive. It takes some time for him to understand “who is the master”; however, once you successfully show him who’s in charge, he becomes very affectionate towards you. But be careful not to offend his pride! Towards strangers, he is distant and sometimes even haughty. He tries as much as possible to avoid them but he is not an aggressive dog: it is simply that his loyalty is limited to a single family, or even a single person. Towards children, he is not particularly comfortable when they shout and run around the house. However, he can adjust to them if he lives with them from a young age. 00:00 The Origin of the Afghan Hound. 00:49 The character of the Afghan Hound.
