When you sing a BHAJAN, it contains questions and answers, the divine name, and most importantly, devotion. The very essence of bhajan is bhakti, which means love, and through it, you must become one with the Divine. Still water and salt are separate, but once mixed, they become inseparable. As Rahim Raje said, “The path of love is so narrow that two cannot walk together; they must become one to pass through.” The thread of love is delicate—so fine and fragile. Do not break it with doubts. When a devotee allows doubt to enter, it is like adding lemon to milk—it curdles. Therefore, within your chitta, your vrittis, your consciousness, let there be only One: the Supreme, God, or your Beloved—however you wish to call That. In BHAKTI YOGA, I see two types of devotion. The first is SAKAMA BHAKTI—devotion with desire. These are the common prayers: “God, please bless me with a son.” “God, help my children succeed in their studies.” “God, please help them pass their exams, find good jobs, and get married.” These prayers all ask for something in return. Then there is NISHKAMA BHAKTI—love without expectation. People often ask me the difference between KIRTAN and BHAJAN. Kirtan is simply the chanting of the Divine Name—there are countless names: “Radhe Radhe,” the name of Radha; “Krishna,” the name of Krishna; “Sriman Narayan,” “Lakshmi Narayan,” “Om Namah Shivaya,” and many others. If a devotee’s heart is free from doubt and filled with unconditional love, they merge with the Supreme through this singing. Yet, BHAJAN is said to be even deeper, for it brings greater understanding. A bhajan carries teachings, answers, wisdom, and the Divine Name itself. Through its poetry, verses, and stanzas, it guides the heart. A MANTRA holds power through sound and vibration—it is compact energy. “Man” means “mind,” and we are all still striving to understand this mind. No saint ever reached realization without devotion. Whether it was Buddha, not so long ago, or the great sage Kapilamuni, author of the Sankhya philosophy mentioned even by Krishna, each attained truth through bhakti, meditation, mantra, and humility. And for this path, a GURU is essential. You cannot learn without one. To reject the guru is a sign of ego. No one has realized the Ultimate Reality—what we call the Guru Principle—without a teacher. Once, someone asked, “Why is the guru always higher and the disciple lower?” A professor explained it beautifully: There are two glasses—one filled with water, the other empty. If I wish to pour the water from one into the other, which glass should I lift higher? The one that pours, or the one that receives? In the same way, knowledge, blessings, and wisdom flow toward the devotee who has humility and surrender in their heart.
