In the winter of 1808–1809, Sir John Moore led a British army deep into northern Spain to distract Napoleon and relieve pressure on Spanish forces. When Napoleon advanced with overwhelming strength, Moore executed a brutal fighting retreat through icy mountains toward the port of Corunna. Discipline frayed, supplies ran thin, and French forces pressed hard—but the withdrawal was skillfully managed, buying time for evacuation by sea. On 16 January 1809, during the Battle of Corunna, Moore directed the defense as British troops held off Marshal Soult’s attacks. A cannonball struck him in the shoulder and chest, shattering bone and tearing deep into his body. Mortally wounded, he remained calm, asking whether his men had repulsed the enemy and expressing satisfaction when told they had. He died that night and was buried hurriedly on the ramparts, as the army embarked. Moore’s sacrifice preserved the core of Britain’s field army. Though the campaign seemed a retreat, it prevented destruction and demonstrated that disciplined withdrawal under pressure was possible. The army he saved would return under Wellington, hardened and wiser, shaping the long struggle that ultimately drove French forces from the Peninsula. #historicalmetal #aimusic #powermetal #britishhistory #peninsulawar
