World War I dreadnought battleships were immense floating fortresses, typically displacing 20,000–28,000 tons, stretching around 160–180 meters long, and armored with up to 270–350 mm of hardened steel along their belts and turrets. They were powered mainly by coal-fired boilers (often supplemented with oil), consuming enormous amounts of fuel — tens of tons per hour at high speed — and required crews of 800–1,100 men to operate. Keeping one running meant constant labor: stokers feeding furnaces in extreme heat, engineers maintaining turbines and pumps, and dockyard workers handling large-scale overhauls. Their defining feature was their heavy main battery: guns ranging from 11-inch (280 mm) to 15-inch (381 mm) caliber. These cannons fired shells weighing 385–860 kg over distances approaching 20 kilometers or more. A single broadside could hurl many tons of steel in seconds, capable of penetrating thick armor and crippling enemy ships. Dreadnoughts embodied the industrial age at sea — massive, expensive, and technologically advanced — though their strategic dominance was soon challenged by submarines and aircraft. #historicalmetal #powermetal #aimetal #aimusic #ww1 #navalwarfare
