This group of Kodiak bears walking the beach are likely drawn together by a rich food source, such as the nearby pink salmon run. While normally solitary, bears will tolerate each other’s presence when food is plentiful and competition is outweighed by opportunity. These temporary gatherings, called “feeding aggregations,” are a common sight on Kodiak’s shores during peak salmon season. Of further note, Kodiak bear cubs, like many brown bear cubs, are often born with a pale “collar” or white ring of fur around their neck or shoulders. This marking usually fades as they grow older, blending into their darker adult coats.
