Hiking Volcano Acatenango - Without a guide

If you ask anyone who has been to Guatemala what their favorite part of the trip was, you'll most likely hear it was the Fuego or Acatenango hike. The hike is fairly straightforward, you hike up volcano Acatenango, which is connected by a saddle ridge to the active Volcano Fuego, and you get to watch Fuego erupt, on an average every 15 minutes. The hike itself requires you to climb about 5000ft in vertical gain and is usually done in a group, camping at the top. But we are cheap, and don't have the right gear to sleep in below freezing temperatures. So that really only left one option, at least to us. Forget the tent and the sleeping bags, and do the hike overnight. This did end up being one of the most beautiful and scenic hikes of the whole trip, and seeing an active volcano isn't something you get to experience very often. All in all, a great experience.
