UKNOF46 - XR Optics. Next generation access using all-optical subcarrier multiplexing

Speaker: Mr Geoff Bennett (Infinera) http://uknof.uk/46/ One of the biggest costs in any access network is the need to adapt lower access data rates into higher data rate backbone transport. Historically this has been achieved using either OTN switching in legacy systems or packet switching for modern applications. All-optical communication would obviously remove the need for expensive Optical-Electronic-Optical interconnects, but until now it has not been possible to achieve data rate adaptation in the optical domain. This presentation introduces a new industry initiative to create an all-optical aggregation and multiplexing capability based on Nyquist subcarriers. The initiative is called XR Optics, and is an open consortium of optical component companies, coherent DSP developers and system vendors. The presentation will focus on a technical explanation of the new transponder design, the need for standardised form factors, implications for host support, and the implications for the optical access network.
