Day 2, Doing the will of the Father. The First Law of Heaven Let’s remind ourselves of how the Savior announced himself to the Nephites … “Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world. And behold, I am the light and the life of the world; and I have drunk out of that bitter cup which the Father hath given me, and have glorified the Father in taking upon me the sins of the world, in the which I have suffered the will of the Father in all things from the beginning.” (3 Nephi 11:8-11) The part at the end that says, “I suffered the will of the Father.” In my mind this verse ascends, this verse moves up in His declaration, His witness, ascending to that last line—that He has suffered the will of the Father in all things from the beginning. Brothers and Sisters, I propose, that’s why we’re here. I have heard it said that obedience is the first law of heaven. Have you ever heard that before? Everybody has probably heard that. Question, Who said that? Did we just make that up? Does anybody know the source for that? I don’t know the original source, and the truthfulness of it is as old as the gospel. But there is someone who actually said it. Joseph F. Smith, Elder Ballard’s great-great-grandfather, said it in April of 1873. He may not have been the first, but he’s the first that I can find. And I suppose almost every prophet has said it since. President Thomas S. Monson said, in April 2013, that in this life the great test is of obedience. Then he told a story about burning up the countryside, about setting fire to the neighborhood over in Provo Canyon. And, Elder Bednar has focused on the Law of Obedience recently. Why is this the first law of heaven, and to do the will of the Father—which is just a sort a grander approach to obedience? Why is it the first law of heaven? Why would we use that phrase? My friends, we have our moral agency, and if we want to fulfill our potential, we must be obedient to God’s laws and will. Otherwise, the results will be disastrous for you and I. The reality is, gods law and will is the way things really are, it’s the way the universe works. And choosing to do the will of the Father is living at the highest level of the Law of Obedience.
