Day 5, Most Worth Unto You Selfless Service Yesterday, we talked about the Ammon principle of selfless service. I will mention just two of the many blessings that come to our selflessly serving others. First, as you serve together with family and friends the Lord and God’s children, you and your family will feel that they are part of a greater cause! A 2018 Brigham Young University study revealed that young people who serve strangers have a higher self- worth. (See “BYU Study Finds Youth Who Serve Strangers Have a Higher Self-Esteem,” Church News, Jan. 18, 2018, ChurchofJesusChrist.org.) A second blessing of selfless service to others will create people’s interest in Jesus Christ and His restored gospel, why you are serving right now, and what your real motives are. Remember your motives, your purpose as a disciple of Jesus Christ, you are choosing God, and loving His Children I believe that serving with pure motives is part of what the Savior promised when He said: “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. “Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14–16.) My dear friends, please encourage, allow, make time for, and find appropriate service opportunities for you and your family and friends. You will bless the people you have the privilege to serve, and it will bless your family and friends by providing them experiences that will help them emotionally and spiritually. You will help them become a “light on a hill.” People will see their “good works, and glorify [their] Father which is in heaven.” (See Matthew 5:14–16.) Some might say that this won’t work in my family. You say this, because your current family culture is more than likely self-serving then selfless. More than likely everyone is turning inward towards self. That is normal in the world we live in today. It is because the adversary has taught the world to turn away from God and that happiness is found by turning to yourself. Why, because repentance means to turn, to turn to God. away from the natural man. The natural man is selfish, and all sin is selfish. We want to become a saint through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. That means we turn to God and become self-less. If you and I want to change our family and friend culture or your current circumstance, we need to quite asking how and just have selfless serving experiences with Christ. You just do it. I promise you if you go and do, the Lord will provide a way. There is always a way, and Jesus Christ is the center of this way in His work.
