In this video, Issac shares his incredible journey of building a custom Maule M7 235A bush plane, designed to push the boundaries of off-airport flying in Alaska. From his first caribou hunting trip in the Brooks Range with his dad to mastering the art of creating high-performance bush planes, Issac’s passion for flying is clear. The project had a simple but ambitious goal: to build a long-wing M7 with big tanks, big tires, and keep it under 1,500 pounds. After years of falling short, Issac was determined to give it one more shot by starting from scratch. He walks us through the unique challenge of removing unnecessary components, while still striving to create the perfect plane for off airport performance. Some of these changes include adding the longest composite prop ever approved for an M7, and custom features like DeLorean style doors and lightweight, special-made seats. Issac also shares what makes this M7 235A the best-performing Maule he's ever flown. With a cruising speed of 127 mph and the ability to land in ultra-short strips, this plane is a game-changer. It can even haul whole moose from 250ft, remote, Alaskan, airstrips. Throughout the build, Issac offers insights into his flying techniques—how he evaluates landing strips based on color and texture and builds a mental map of obstacles when navigating rugged terrain. His years of experience flying bush planes alongside his father have taught him invaluable lessons about precision, patience, and safety in off-airport landings. Issac’s passion for flying goes beyond just building planes. It's about accessing remote places few have seen and exploring untouched corners of Alaska. And he's not stopping here—his next project is already in the works!
