The third movement of the sonata, titled "Precipitato," is a fast and furious toccata-like piece in 2/2 time. It is characterized by its relentless, driving rhythms and dissonant harmonies, which create a sense of tension and urgency throughout the movement. The technical demands of this piece are considerable, requiring the pianist to perform rapid scale passages, complex rhythmic patterns, and thundering chords with precision and speed. "Precipitato" is widely regarded as one of Prokofiev's most challenging piano works, and is a favorite among virtuosos and audiences alike for its explosive energy and sheer excitement. The sonata as a whole is sometimes referred to as the "Stalingrad," in reference to the pivotal battle of World War II that took place in the city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) in Russia. Prokofiev dedicated the sonata to the memory of his close friend and fellow composer Vsevolod Meyerhold, who was executed by Soviet authorities in 1940. The work has been interpreted as a reflection of Prokofiev's own struggles with the Soviet government, and its complex and often dissonant harmonies have been seen as a musical representation of the turbulent political climate of the time. That’s why I’ve decided to post it today instead of posting it sometime down the line, in a Prokofiev project.:) Today the far-right party PVV won the elections in the Netherlands and this piece about incapsulates my feelings on the matter. Precisely because they are extremely homophobic, Islamophobia, xenophobic and would also like to stop funding the arts and the national news. Yikes Next Monday regular programming continues with Rach sonata in full and then the last part of 6 Moments Musicaux. Next year I’m doing Tchaikovsky the seasons every first day of the month, and I’ll loosely try to sprinkle some pieces here and there opposed to a big project like I did this year, because tbh I’m not good with deadlines and my productivity comes and goes. I’ll do the first and second movement of this sonata later as well. :)
