"Final Journey on the 138-Year-Old Bahraich-Nepalganj Road Metre Gauge(CHOTI LINE): A Nostalgic In February 2024, the Bahraich-Nepalganj Road Metre Gauge section of the North Eastern Railway, under the Lucknow Division, is marking its final days. This historic metre gauge line, which has served generations of passengers, will permanently close on February 9, 2024, for a gauge conversion, upgrading it to broad gauge to support the growing needs of modern railways. While this transformation is crucial for development, it brings an emotional end to the 138-year-old metre gauge service, once known for its charm and legacy. The Nanpara-Mailani section will remain operational for now, but soon the era of the metre gauge will be a memory. In this journey video , we embark on one last emotional journey across this route, traveling from Bahraich to Nepalganj Road. As we capture this final ride, I share personal stories passed down through my family, like my father's trips to Nepal for my grandfather's eye treatment, using this very line. Along the way, we’ll also delve into the rich history of this line, which dates back to 1882, when it was first constructed by the Bengal and North Western Railways as part of the Patna-Bahraich rail link, completed by 1891. By 1893, the line extended to Nanpara Junction, further connecting to Nepalganj Road on the India-Nepal border. This route was a lifeline for trade, travel, and memories for people in the region. During the journey, I reflect on the current status of the line, where a few pairs of passenger trains still operate, and the once-famous Gokul Express, which was the only express service connecting Gonda to Izzatnagar. The station names, the nostalgic sound of the YDM-4 locomotive, and the token exchange system, all highlight a bygone era of Indian Railways that will soon cease to exist. In this video, you will witness: The journey starts from Bahraich Railway Station, with a final glance at its timeless beauty, featuring a Metre Gauge YDM-4 locomotive waiting for departure. You can almost feel the echoes of history as we pass through iconic stations like Risia and Nanpara Junction, where token rings are still exchanged in a practice now rare in Indian Railways. Watch our train move alongside a broad gauge WAG-5 locomotive a rare parallel moment before the metre gauge train proceeds towards its own path. The stunning green rural landscapes of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, captured as the train moves steadily along the tracks, offering a peaceful and nostalgic view from inside the vintage coaches. The charm of small stations like Babaganj, which is surrounded by dense greenery and holds countless stories of local travelers who relied on this route for generations. The emotional final arrival at Nepalganj Road Station, a quiet terminal station at the edge of the India-Nepal border, where the journey ends for both the train and this section of the metre gauge. With the upcoming gauge conversion, Indian Railways will introduce modern broad gauge trains, replacing the old signalling systems and revamping the infrastructure to meet modern needs. But for now, this video captures the last whispers of a railway era that will soon be consigned to history. Join me on this heartfelt final journey as we say goodbye to one of the oldest metre gauge lines in India.
