Paul Starr, a Pulitzer Prize-winning scholar at Princeton University and co-founder and co-editor of The American Prospect, joined the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute for a virtual conversation on Tuesday, December 9th.. In this discussion, Pulitzer Prize–winning sociologist Paul Starr explores the central argument of his book American Contradiction, which examines how the United States was founded on the conflicting ideals of freedom and slavery, a tension that continues to shape modern politics. Drawing on his interdisciplinary background, Starr explains how demographic changes, civil rights movements, and shifting cultural norms have collided with entrenched institutions, producing today’s deep divide between a “changing people” and a “resisting nation.” Starr traces major political and social shifts since the 1950s, from the rights revolutions of the 1960s to the conservative counterreactions, economic transformations, and policy decisions that contributed to current partisan realignments. He highlights the growing institutional imbalance in American politics, particularly in the courts, and the weakening of organized labor. Despite these challenges, Starr expresses cautious optimism that a more stable, norm-respecting political environment could reemerge.
