Today we will dive into the history of St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest continuously occupied settlement in The United States, first founded in 1565. Accompanying our discussion will be the incredible oldest photographs of St. Augustine, taken between the years of 1865 and 1900. The city was 300 years old at the time of the first photographs, and the ancient walls certainly appear to tell a story. I’ve supplied the title for each image, when applicable. The question becomes - What can we decipher? St. Augustine also once had a slew of fortifications that shaped the ancient settlement, including a handful of star forts. By the 1880’s, St. Augustine was transformed into a massive array of hotels, orchestrated under the order of the industrial age tycoon, Henry Flagler.
